You may have heard the recent news that the US government has issued a warning about Russian state-sponsored cyber attacks on network infrastructure, specifically targeting home and business routers and modems.
In response to this security threat, we recommend that you update the login credentials of relevant devices by changing the password of those devices. Here are two options to do this:
Option 1 – Self-Service
Make sure your new password is secure.
Most routers and modems have a generic password assigned to the devices. We recommend changing it by creating a secure password using the following criteria:
- A password with 12 characters or more
- A mixture of letter and numbers
- A mixture of UPPERCASE and lowercase
- If possible, at least one symbol (ex: !@#$%^_&*=-+)
- No spaces
Be sure to write down your new password and store it in a safe place, in case you ever need it in the future. Clearly indicate what characters are CaPitaliZed and what are 1numbers.
Follow the instructions from your internet service provider.
Let us know about the changes.
Once you have successfully updated your modem or router's credentials, make sure to call OunceIT support (617-600-4605 ext. 2) and let us know the details so that we can update our records.
*Important note: passwords should never be communicated or transferred via email. Please do NOT attempt to send your updated credentials to OunceIT support in an email.
Option 2 – Engage OunceIT
We can help.
We realize this is something most people never do on their own. If you want our help to make these updates, reach out to us and we’ll open up a support ticket for one of our OunceIT technicians to follow-up ASAP.
